Boys From Brazil - We Don't Need No World War III (Import 12 Inch / 1987)

01 We Don't Need No World War III (CIA Mix) 6:50
02 We Don't Need No World War III (KGB Mix) 7:20

A classic slice of the (then) West German label Westside. This 12 inch, number 008 in the catalogue for Westside, holds true to the underground scene at the time. A Balearic feel with hints of what New Beat was about to become and what other artists from the label were emulating. Other artists such as Axodry, Two Of China, Moskwa TV, MCL, Voyou and even early Camouflage. This is a slower brooding track with the unmistakable bass kick and synth rolls. The vocal track is a tell-tale of the political times. Spoken word with light singing regarding all that is doom between the U.S. and the U.S.S.R. In my opinion, Westside Records and everything they put out were extremely influential at the time, despite the relative monotony of some specific tracks. Songs feel more like a test and loop of electronics, a way for the artists to get on a soapbox and warn you about the State of the Nations.

All art and recordings are taken from my original 12 inch. I paid $0.99 for it! I uploaded the images to the Discogs site as well.

The Icicle Works - Seven Singles Deep (Import LP / 1986)

01 Hollow Horse (Long Version) 4:57
02 Love Is A Wonderful Colour (Long Version) 6:47
03 Birds Fly (Whisper To A Scream) (Frantic Mix) 5:21
04 All The Daughters (Of Her Father's House) (Long Version) 6:32
05 When It All Comes Down (Unabridged Version) 6:33
06 Seven Horses (American Version) 4:44
07 Rapids 4:28

So the long and short of this release is that it basically is an EP style release of 12 inches. All the tracks were from the Icicle Works first two LP's, the self titled release from 1983 and the 1985 release 'The Small Price Of A Bicycle'. Granted, these are 12 inch versions of the original releases. The vinyl has stood the test of time...relatively. The record itself has been played quite a bit and I was disappointed with the recordings I took from it. I decided to buy both CD Remasters of the first two records. Both Reissues/Remasters had expanded material added.

I used the tracks from those remasters for this post. Oddly, as it sometimes happens with remasters, there is a tendency to not go full-on in the remastering process. At least it feels that way. The 2011 remaster of The Small Price... seems like just an expanded release, sounding quite similar to the original 1985 CD...which I also have. The 2006 remaster of the 1983 S/T Release has been brick-walled, technically over done and extremely loud and compressed. Given all that, I used the tracks provided and then re-EQ'ed and lowered the dB standing of said tracks. Don't get me wrong, it still sounds great, just not excellent or up to snuff of a 'proper' remaster. All art is taken from my 1986 gate fold import LP.

Schiller Mit Heppner - Dream Of You (US CDS / 2002)

01 Original Radio Edit 4:02
02 Molella Radio Edit 3:47
03 Extended Mix 7:49
04 Tomkraft Remix 7:31
05 Ayla Remix 8:44
06 Molella Remix 5:09
07 Free Schiller Remix 9:38
08 Chillout Remix 11:07

This track recently came up in conversation over the band Wolfsheim. I have to say that their work is superb and that Peter Heppner's solo material is outstanding. This leads me to this track from the German electronic act Schiller. They brought in Peter for the vocals. It turned out to be an awesome track that had plenty of club play back in 2001, when it was released on the Schiller CD 'Weltreise'.

Wall Of Voodoo - Mexican Radio (US 12 Inch / 1982)

01 Mexican Radio 3:54
02 There's Nothing On This Side 6:36
03 Mexican Radio (Dub Version) 4:08

Bonus

04 There's Nothing On This Side 10:42

One of my friends requested this some time ago, so I figured now is a good time as any to give it a proper recording. It's been listed on the Discogs site in many ways. I've decided to give you the breakdown of the tracks and as a bonus, the full 10+ minute version as it is labeled on the vinyl and jacket. There is no mention of 'Mexican Radio (Dub Version) on the record itself, but it is quite apparent that it is, in one way or another, some form of the track. It is my labeling as (Dub Version). No official word as to what it's called unless you believe everything Discog site posts!  All the tracks and the artwork are from this original 12 inch.

Eurythmics - This Is The House (UK 12 Inch / 1982)

01 This Is The House 6:16
02 Your Time Will Come (Live) 7:30
03 Never Gonna Cry Again (Live) 4:37
04 4 In 4 Leather (Live) 3:04
05 Take Me To Your Heart (Live) 5:02

Bonus

06 Your Time Will Come - Never Gonna Cry Again - 4-4 In Leather (Live) 15:13

As with my previous Eurythmics post, my thanks go out to the work of my friend Petee and his recordings of this original 12 inch. I respect his process and appreciate the time he has taken to make this file. In this case, I own the original UK 12 inch and probably could have recorded it myself, but I'm sticking with the tracks that were provided for me. I did take one liberty in providing you with a bonus track of all the live recordings as one solid track. I did not include 'Take Me To Your Heart' because it doesn't feel as if it's live. It has little or no crowd noise. All art & recordings are taken from the original UK 12 inch. Thanks again for all the requests and input. I'm working on several other postings at the moment!

A quick edit and side note (12-2-14), DJ Paul T has posted this 12 inch as well on his blog( BTG). He has used his own art and recording for his post, not to draw any conclusions if you thought we we're sharing any files between us. Thanks!

Eurythmics - The Walk (UK 12 Inch / 1982)

01 The Walk 4:43
02 Invisible Hands 6:08
03 Dr. Trash 3:18
04 The Walk (Part 2) 3:59

Thanks for the outside requests! I do have to say that despite NOT having this in my collection, I am able to post it. My thanks go out to the work of my friend Petee and his recordings of this original 12 inch. I respect his process and appreciate him for the work he has put forward. Outside of that, I had no original art to work with, so I boosted the images from the Discogs site. I dislike the fact that the web page doesn't allow for higher quality, but these are clear and worthy for now. All recordings are taken from the original 12 inch and all the art is from the Discogs website, not to be redundant.

A quick note and edit (12-3-14), same as the last Eurythmics post. DJ Paul T has posted this 12 inch on his blog as well (BTG). He used his own art and recordings for his post. We did not share files or art. Just crazy coincidence...or the same person requested the same tracks to both our pages! ;)

V/A - Volume Three (UK CD & Book / 1992)

Continuing on with the UK Volume Series. Here's Volume Three. There are always so many great tracks and remixes on these, that it is hard to just focus on any one favourite track for review. Enjoy all of them. I'm happy to see that LFO is represented here. It was a massive hit to the electronic community when founding LFO member, Mark Bell passed just recently this year.

Severed Heads - Hot With Fleas (Canadian 12 Inch / 1987)

01 Hot With Fleas (Extended) 7:22
02 Hot With Fleas (Album Version) 3:20
03 Canine (Extended) 6:49

I recently came across Tom Ellard's bandcamp page for Severed Heads releases. I highly recommend any fan to go to this site http://severedheads.bandcamp.com/music and purchase some of his back catalogue for a mere $5 per release. That is what inspired me to pull this lovely vinyl out and give it the proper work up. All recordings and art are from this original twelve inch!

Marillion - He Knows You Know (UK 12 Inch / 1983)

01 He Knows You Know 5:06
02 Charting The Single 4:52

This single was one of the first tracks I had ever heard by Marillion. I was hooked. The special thing about this was the fact that I didn't hear it on my local radio. I had a fantastic stereo tuner that was able to pick up signals from neighboring States. I randomly tuned in to a distant signal one late evening to hear this track and several other bands I'd never heard of before. Hell, I heard an INXS track and recorded it to tape spelling it 'In Excess'. Oh to be young and naive all over again! On with it...all art and tracks are taken from this 12 inch release. Enjoy.

James Ray & The Performance - A New Kind Of Assassin (Import CD / 1989)

As promised earlier, I wanted to add this compilation import CD release to the James Ray folder. I'm certain that if you found my last post of his entertaining, you will undoubtedly enjoy this one. It's a good time for it!

01 The Center Bullet 9:46
02 Ophelia 8:29
03 Tear Garden 4:50
04 My Thorny,Thorny Crown 3:57

Bonus

05 Tear Garden - My Thorny, Thorny Crown 8:47

Here is the other track I spoke of in my previous MC 900 Ft Jesus post. I just can't seem to get over the lovely eerie spatial feel of this brooding track. It made for a great early evening listening on Halloween night, or what ever night I was DJing for a Hallow's Eve celebration. It's easy to understand why this works so well. Edward Ka-Spel (Legendary Pink Dots) & Cevin Key (Skinny Puppy) are at the helm of the creation!

All art & recordings are from the twelve inch. I've included a bonus full length seamless mix of the last two tracks for a more complete effect along with the individual tracks.

MC 900 Ft Jesus - The City Sleeps (US CDS / 1992)

01 The City Sleeps (Radio Edit) 4:40
02 The City Sleeps (Vocal Remix) 5:51
03 The City Sleeps (Clarinet Remix) 5:49
04 The City Sleeps (Instrumental) 4:16

Halloween and All Saint's Day are right around the corner. On that note, I have a few posts that fit the mood quite proper. This lovely little night time track from MC 900 Ft. Jesus was a staple in my early Halloween DJ sets. I play 'The City Sleeps' so often, that it's one of the top tracks on my iPod and it has won the heart of my twelve year old daughter. Granted, it's not something I condone, but this track is all about arson and the eradicating of 'ghosts' in the night, which I believe to be bad memories. Offered up on the CDS are several mixes, but I always stuck with the original and Instrumental. All tracks and art are from the original release.

The Lover Speaks - Every Lover's Sign (US Promo 12 Inch / 1986)

01 Every Lover's Sign (New Extended Mix) 5:52
02 Every Lover's Sign (Dub Mix) 6:38

I Am A Spy, Spying On Myself...A Tragic Subject: Every Lover's Sign

Eight Seconds - Kiss You (When It's Dangerous) (Canadian 12 Inch / 1986)

01 Kiss You (When It's Dangerous) 4:07
02 Land Of The Monsters 4:34
03 Kiss You (When It's Dangerous) (Extended Mix) 6:02

During the Autumn of 1986, Eight Seconds emerged on the US Pop scene with this one and only hit. The track and the full length release 'Almacantar' were promoted with a US Tour as the opening act for Wang Chung's tour to promote 'Mosaic'. I had a 6th row seat for this show in Milwaukee at the Riverside. I also was able to hang out with Andres and Frank following the show. I took them nightclubbing and they followed up by guesting me into the concert the next night in Chicago. Of course I went. A great time!

The two tracks from the a-side are taken from the CD 'Almacantar'. The extended mix of the title track was recorded from the 12 inch. The sound quality is evident. Not bad, but not up to my standards of crispness...even with a bit of tweaking. All art was taken from this original vinyl as well.

J.W.B Hits The Beat - Body On Body (German Import 12 Inch / 1987)

01 Body On Body (Climax Mix) 6:29
02 One Day In My Life (Nighttrain Mix) 5:04

These next two posts are requests from months ago. I've had the vinyl set a side for sometime and have finally got around to recording and photographing them. They both are from the classic German label West Side and are from 1987. This was quite the influential sound at the time. Many similar artists used the latest technologies to build and shape these electronic tracks. Underground club hits that eventually shaped the sound of all dance floors worldwide, not just underground, but R&B, Dance & Pop!

Both the records are on loan from a good friend of mine. All art & recordings are from the actual 12 inch.

Midge Ure - Wastelands (UK 12 Inch / 1986)

01 Wastelands (Extended Mix) 6::11
02 The Chieftan / The Dancer (Live) 6:00
03 No Regrets 4:00

Recently, I attended the 2014 Retro Futura Tour. On that bill was Tom Bailey (Thompson Twins), Howard Jones, Midge Ure, China Crisis and Katrina from Katrina & The Waves. It was a superb night show that was played at the Chicago Ravinia outdoor concert venue. I've decided to post this twelve inch to salute a bit of the 80's Retro past. All art and recordings were taken directly from this 12 inch.

Ministry - I'm Falling (US 12 Inch / 1982)

01 I'm Falling 4:03
02 Primental 5:13
03 Cold Life 6:18

On of the rare and early 12 inch records released on Wax Trax! The information is visible in the photo of the back of the record jacket. A nice unique way of envelope packaging adds to the rarity of this release. All the photos and recordings were taken from this record. In addition, the photos I took and retouched have been added to the discogs site for this release.

Luc Van Acker - Luc Van Acker (The Ship) (LP / 1986)

01) The Ship 3:51
02) Rain 4:37
03) Zanna 3:06
04) Heart And Soul 4:16
05) Feels Like Love 3:51
06) Wild And Angry 3:51
07) Keep Talking 4:25
08) Wildlife 3:34

Another slab of good ole Wax Trax! Records (WAX 015). This is a twisted funky alternative. Luc Van Acker went on to bigger fame following this solo record (actually recorded in 1984). When listening to the B-Side, the last four tracks, you can hear the beginning sounds of what was to become The Revolting Cocks. All art and recordings were taken directly from this original LP. All the photos were shared to the Discogs website.

A Popular History Of Signs - A Popular History Of Signs (EP) (US 12 Inch / 1984)

01) Ladder Jack 5:07
02) House 3:37
03) If She Was A Car 5:17
04) Stigma 4:32

A Popular History Of Signs was Chicago based Wax Trax! Records fifth release from 1984 (WAX 005). It's a four track EP featuring Andy Jarman on Vocals & Bass, Peter Scammell on Synth & Guitar, Christine Isherwood singing Backing Vocals, Paul Clark on Percussion, John Lucibello on Drums and Andy Smith on Guitar. The first two tracks were produced by none other than Al Jourgensen of 'Ministry' fame.

The first few tracks have that early Wax Trax! / Ministry feel, but the vocals recall a somber David Byrne vocal style similar to some of the early Talking Heads releases. As for the third and fourth tracks, cue up any early Joy Division! Again, the vocals feel early David Byrne (in my opinion) or Ian Curtis if you stretch it a bit. Not a bad listen at all. I really only have it in my collection because it is an early Wax Trax! release. All recordings and art were taken from this 12 inch. All the art I reworked, has been shared to the Discogs site as well.
